Weight loss: Exercise or Diet? Which one works?

It can be very frustrating and discouraging to be training and exercising consistently only to find the scale not budging! I don't know about you but I've always assumed that the more I exercise and work out the more I can eat and still lose weight.  The problem with this thinking is it doesn't quite work that way.  It only took me a few years of working out consistently and training for 5 half marathons to figure it out.

So here's the lowdown on losing weight.

Simply put, your body must burn more calories than you consume.

In order to lose 1 pound in a week, you need to burn 3500 calories, which is basically 500 calories a day. In reality, it's much easier to eat less than 500 calories in a day than it is to burn 500 extra calories through exercise. Most of us don't have the time or motivation to spend an hour or more at the gym or exercising at home.

While you can lose weight with diet alone, combining a healthy diet with exercise can help you lose that weight quicker, make you stronger and healthier and help keep the pounds from sneaking back on.

In order to reap the benefits of exercise, the American Heart Association recommends adults get 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise. That's just 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week! We can all find 30 minutes in our day to love and take care of ourselves.  That 30 minutes can even broken down into 10 minute increments 3 times a day... so you can kiss your excuses good bye!

Here are just a few of the benefits regular exercise has on your body:

  • lowers blood pressure
  • reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease
  • burns calories
  • prevents Type 2 diabetes by keeping blood sugar stable
  • may help prevent certain types of cancer
  • reduces depression and enhances your mood by causing an endorphin release
  • reduces stress
  • boosts energy levels

So you see, exercise isn't just about losing weight!

Its about so much more!

It's about living a long healthy life, having the energy to do the things we enjoy and to spend time with the people we love.

It's about loving and respecting ourselves enough to make healthy choices.

Fall in love with taking care of yourself!  Eat good real food, exercise, sleep, laugh, flourish!
